Why
vote “NO” on State Issue 5?
Why
vote “NO” on State Issue 5?
On the face, this Constitutional Issue says that it
simply makes a state-wide “Board of Directors” for the
election process. This becomes a 9-member board made up of
4 from each party and one appointed by the Ohio Supreme
Court. Interestingly,
this individual from the Supreme Court may not have been
involved in any political party in the past 10 years. If
such a person exists who is likewise able to run a
state-wide department, do we really want someone involved
who has no experience or obvious interest in Ohio
elections? The
proposed amendment would create a new statewide elections
board that would consist of members who are politically
appointed for 9-year terms, and would never be accountable
to Ohio voters. This
Constitutional amendment effectively ends the local
control over Ohio elections that is currently exercised by
our bipartisan county elections boards.
This
proposed amendment would also eliminate the role of Ohio's
Secretary of State in Ohio's election system. The new
statewide board of political appointees would replace our
elected Secretary of State.
Lastly
and perhaps just as disturbing as any other reason, the
proposed amendment would essentially give the appointed
elections board a “blank check” to spend any and all
tax dollars that it desires. It does not explain why it is
necessary to give this group of political appointees the
power to spend unlimited amounts of tax dollars, without
being accountable to Ohio voters or elected Ohio public
officials.
Don’t
we have enough bureaucracies in Ohio? Do we really have to
have another one that has NO constraints on spending at
all?
Vote
“NO” Tuesday, November 8th, for State
Issues 2, 3, 4, and 5.
