Illegal Aliens and the War on Terror

This past weekend I was invited to a very moving and memorable service commemorating the 2001 acts of war on our nation at the First Baptist Church of Glen Este. It was also a service to show a community’s appreciation for their Police, Fire, and EMT’s.  The service was solemn, prayerful, and yet exhilarating, all at the same time.  Rev. Brent Snook introduced the congregation to those Safety Service personnel in attendance as those who America now calls our “real heroes”.  He then went on to speak some of the most prayerful words of hope for our nation.  I too pray that his optimism becomes our future.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, this nation enjoyed an upsurge in patriotism not seen in decades.  We all seemed to come together to mourn our loss.  Although we all made and waived banners that said “Lest We Forget”... it seems many have in fact forgotten.  It actually seems now that some forgot that they ever said they “would never forget”!

During the investigations of how such a diabolical act could be perpetrated on this country, it was made clear that our open borders were a big part of the problem. To this day they are still relatively wide open.  Poll after poll shows that Americans are deeply concerned over the open borders. The unrestricted flow of illegal aliens into this country outright scares Americans… and for good reason.  Unfortunately, it does not look like we are going to get any action any time soon from Washington.

In Ohio, we have a significant presence of illegal aliens.  I am not referring to those who have legally come into this country as guest workers, but to those who have come here without registering.  They take jobs away from Ohioans and put stress on local governments in terms of enforcement and public assistance. They get counted in the census (which will cause us to lose at least one congressional seat in Ohio in five years), yet pay no income taxes.

In an effort to protect Ohio jobs and businesses that do follow the law, the Republicans in the Ohio House of Representatives will be looking this week at legislation that will address many of the issues involved with illegal aliens.  The legislation will actually support and protect legal immigrants from issues associated with illegal aliens as well as aid legal immigration efforts.

Now the Democrats accuse the Republicans of this being a “knee jerk” reaction!  I really don’t think that reform that should have taken place at least a decade ago can hardly be considered a “knee jerk” reaction.  I even think the unions will have a hard time not supporting this legislation since it protects many of their members. At least on this one issue, lets put partisan politics aside and work for the common good.

I am not against legal immigration. This is a great nation to live and raise a family. Over the centuries, as the direct result of immigration, our nation has become the proverbial “melting pot” of many different cultures.  This is what has made us so great.  Without immigration reform, this nation will change from being an interesting “melting pot” to a simple boring “stew”.

If you get a chance, email me and tell me what you think on this matter.
