Joe Uecker

State Representative

10/13/06

Who is Joe Uecker and why should you vote for him?

I was talking the other day with a newspaper reporter who called to ask me, in three sentences, what does State Representative Joe Uecker stand for.  While sitting at my desk I read to him what I had basically written when I was running for my first term in 2004 and I keep close by to remember; “I stand for good government, equal protection for all Ohio’s citizens and fiscal responsibility.  I believe Ohioans should keep more of the dollars they earn to spend as they see fit, on retirement, on saving for the future, or for a college education for their children.  I believe in hard work, the importance of a good education and strong family values. My beliefs guide me in my decision making in my own life and in the decisions I make at the Statehouse in Columbus”.  This is what I am about and what I promise to continue to work towards.

In the past two years, during my first term, the General Assembly passed several historic pieces of legislation.  In order to jump start the revitalization of Ohio’s economy, I helped pass the Tax Code Reform bill.  This bill leveled the playing field for businesses across the state while at the same time provided Ohio families with significant tax relief by cutting income tax rates by 21 percent across the board.  This alone has already saved jobs and created incentives for other businesses to invest in Ohio.  At the same time, we passed a budget bill that was the lowest growth budget in over 40 years in Ohio.

Last year I also helped pass a bill that placed State Issue 1, the “Jobs for Ohio” Bill, on the statewide ballot.  This ballot issue was approved by Ohio voters this past November and will help to ensure our state’s ability to expand high-tech industries and attract new businesses.

Medicaid reform was another substantial piece of legislation. Medicaid had previously been growing at near double digit rates and was headed towards totally consuming our budget which would force tax increases (not an option).  Money saving reforms were passed and included increased care options for seniors, expanded enrollment in managed care, and replacement of the nursing home reimbursement formula with one that contains costs and rewards efficiency.

Education was also foremost in my mind.  The education of our children is our highest priority. I helped pass the budget bill that provided record funding levels for K through 12 education as well as higher ed.  The amount of per-pupil funding allocated to education was more the double the amount allocated 10 years ago!  On average, we spend $3 million a day on new school construction projects in Ohio!  As a result, Ohio ranks 11th in the nation in academic standards and accountability.  Ultimately, Ohio spends more than half our budget dollars on education.

My mission has been clearly stated and my actions these past two years back up my sincerity and dedication to represent the 66th Ohio House District and Clermont County.  I ask for the voters to consider me again to represent their interests in Columbus and to vote for me on November 7th to be their State Representative.
