Thank You & What is in store for the rest
of the Year
First and foremost, I would like to thank the voters of
the 66th Ohio House District for their vote of
confidence in my re-election. I would also like to thank
my opponent, Wil Newby, for running a positive campaign.
Neither Wil, nor I , opted to use any negative campaign
strategies and I believe the citizens of Clermont County
appreciate that. Believe it or not, Wil and I did not
meet to agree on ground rules, but maybe we will someday
in the future. I am interested in some of Wil’s ideas that
I heard at the pre-election forums and hope to meet with
him to discuss them soon.
I am always proud that Clermont County voters will always
get out and vote. Usually we lead the state in sheer
voting numbers but this time we fell a point or two below
the rest of the state with Clermont seeing 51% of
registered voters voting while the rest of Ohio averaged
53%.
I have received a number of emails from democrat friends
who said that while they voted for Ted Strickland for
Governor and me for State Representative, they hope that I
will put partisan politics aside and try in earnest to
work with Mr. Strickland. I have high hopes that Mr.
Strickland, as a more conservative individual, will pursue
goals to improve Ohio’s economy as well as other items
will make Ohio once again a great place to work and raise
a family.
So, what do we have in store for the upcoming “lame duck”
session of the General Assembly? I’ll find out more this
week as we start back Tuesday but suffice it to say, it
will be a very busy two months. I do not foresee any
highly controversial bills to get any attention as House
Speaker Jon Husted said that he would rather start off
with the new governor with a spirit of cooperation for
what is best for all of Ohio. The priorities on the
agenda right now will most likely be Governor Taft’s “Ohio
Core” requirements for high schools as well as investment
and oversight authority for the Bureau of Workers
Compensation, and even a statewide energy policy is at the
top of the agenda.
One piece of legislation already aimed at reducing the
state’s reliance on natural gas and other nonrenewable
resources is House Bill 251, that I introduced. The
measure requires efficient energy use at all state
facilities, including state colleges and universities and
would also give preference for the procurement of “energy
star” products that meet federal energy efficiency
guidelines. House Bill 251 passed through the House and is
now awaiting consideration in the Senate.
Using energy efficiently is an important part of any
budget – for individuals, for families and for the state
of Ohio. We continue our commitment to long-term options
for future energy issues, and I look forward to the
results we can achieve with input, dedication and hard
work from local, state and federal participants. By
working together, we can hopefully find energy efficient
solutions that benefit all Ohioans.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or
comments about any item in this article, please drop me a
line.
