Press Release Ohio House Passes Legislation Making Ohio More Energy Efficient
COLUMBUS – December 18, 2006 - State Representative Joseph Uecker (R- Miami Township) today announced the Ohio House has approved House Bill 251 – legislation aimed at reducing the state’s reliance on natural gas and other nonrenewable resources – following Senate consideration and passage.
“As winter arrives and energy prices remain relatively high, it is essential that we explore all reasonable options available for potential cost savings for Ohioans,” said Rep. Uecker, sponsor of the legislation. “The need to expand the available alternatives for more environmentally friendly fuels and keep Ohio’s economy moving is vital.”
The measure institutes public policy that will save both fiscal and substantive resources of the state well into the future. Specifically, House Bill 251 requires efficient energy use at all state facilities, including colleges and universities and would also give preference for purchasing “energy star” products that meet federal energy guidelines. Energy star products are the result of a joint program of the U.S. EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy that meet strict energy efficiency guidelines.
House Bill 251 also includes measures that provide opportunities for job creation around the state. Specifically, the legislation provides the Department of Development with incentives for advancing energy efficient projects and fostering economic development.
“Using energy efficiently is an important part of any budget – for individuals, for families and for the state of Ohio,” said Rep. Uecker. “We continue our commitment to long-term options for future energy issues, and I look forward to the results we can achieve with input, dedication and hard work from local, state and federal participants.”
House Bill 251 was approved yesterday by the Ohio Senate and today by members of the House with a 91-0 vote. The measure now awaits the governor’s signature.
